We transformed an ordinary backyard into an extraordinary woodland retreat — a space where the boundaries between landscape and nature blur into something truly magical. The homeowners dreamed of escaping into their own private forest, and this award-winning design delivers that serenity every single day.

The Natural Water Feature

The soul of this landscape is a naturalistic pond and stream system that meanders through the property like a forest creek discovered on a woodland hike. Large boulders line the water’s edge, carefully placed to appear as though they’ve been there for centuries. The gentle sound of trickling water creates a constant soundtrack of tranquility, masking urban noise and inviting wildlife to visit.

Artful Planting Design

The planting design is where this project truly shines. We layered vibrant foliage in rich burgundies, chartreuse greens, and sunset oranges — a tapestry of color that evolves through the seasons. Shade-loving perennials thrive beneath the canopy of mature trees, while ornamental grasses add movement and texture. Every plant was selected not just for beauty, but for its ability to thrive in Winnipeg’s climate with minimal maintenance.

The coleus, hostas, and coral bells create bold pockets of color, while native plantings attract butterflies and songbirds. The result is a living, breathing ecosystem that changes character from spring through fall.

Boulder Features & Stone Paths

Throughout the landscape, we integrated natural boulders and weathered stone to anchor the design. Winding stone paths invite exploration, leading visitors on a journey through different garden rooms — from sunny poolside spaces to shaded woodland nooks. The organic curves and natural materials reinforce the forest aesthetic at every turn.

Pool Integration

Rather than fighting against the natural theme, the existing pool becomes part of the woodland story. Lush plantings soften the pool’s edges, and the surrounding deck connects seamlessly to meandering garden paths. The pool area feels like a hidden swimming hole discovered deep in the forest.

Shaded Gathering Spaces

We created multiple intimate seating areas tucked throughout the landscape — perfect spots for morning coffee, afternoon reading, or evening conversations. These gathering spaces offer both sun and shade options, ensuring comfort throughout the day and across seasons.

Natural Law proves that even in the city, you can step outside and feel transported to another world — one of quiet reflection, natural beauty, and year-round connection to the outdoors.
