Most pool disappointment in this city is not about the pool. It is about everything that was still unfinished in September.
The usual version goes like this: a pool company excavates, sets the shell, plumbs it and leaves — and the yard is a ring of clay, a temporary fence and a plan to “do the landscaping next year.” Next year the terrace does not quite meet the coping, the grading sends water the wrong way, the equipment pad is in the view from the kitchen, and the thing you actually bought — the backyard — is still two seasons away.
We work the other way round. The pool is placed on a drawing with the terrace, the grade, the sightline from the house, where the sun lands at 6pm, the enclosure, the lighting and the planting already on it. One company, one drawing, one schedule — so the day the water goes in, the yard around it is finished too.
Fibreglass, because a one-piece moulded shell with a gelcoat surface is the most forgiving thing you can put in ground that moves, and the fastest to get in and running in a short prairie season.
What you are actually buying
The shell is rarely the largest line on a pool project — and it is the only part a pool-only installer is responsible for.
Where clay is dealt with. Dig, spoil removal, a granular base the shell beds into, and the levels that decide everything after.
One moulded fibreglass piece, craned in and set. Fast, smooth, and no liner to replace on a cycle.
Plumbing, pump, filtration, heating and the electrical to run it — plus somewhere to put the equipment that is not the view from the kitchen.
The part you actually use. Terrace, coping, grading, drainage, enclosure, lighting, planting and the lawn put back — in the same contract, in the same season.
If you are comparing a pool-only quote against ours, this is where the difference sits. Ask the other quote who does parts three and four, when, and under whose warranty.
Choosing the shell
A pool that leaves no room to walk around it, sit beside it or put a table down is a smaller backyard than you started with. We lay the shell out on the drawing with the furniture and the clearances before anyone picks a shape.
Classic lines beside a terrace, a usable shallow end, and the geometry that suits an automatic cover. The default for a reason.
Best with modern houses and large-format pavingCurves that follow planting and grade rather than the property line — reads as part of the landscape instead of an object dropped into it.
Strongest on larger and irregular lots
Smooth curves with no corners to work around — softer beside planting, and efficient in yards that are wide rather than deep.
Good on tighter city lots
Relaxation and therapy rather than laps. Often paired with a main pool, sometimes the whole answer on a small property.
Runs later into the season with a heaterSizes run from 10′ × 20′ to 16′ × 40’+. As a rule of thumb: family swimming wants 12′ × 24′ or larger, lap swimming 10′ × 40′ or longer. We lay the shell out on the drawing with the furniture and the clearances before anyone picks a shape.
How it goes in
The shell moves fast. The finished yard is what takes the weeks — and it is the reason the schedule is worth reading before you sign anything.

A pool in a prairie climate
The short-season objection is the one we hear most. Here is the honest version.
Opening, start-up and balancing. A heater and a cover together are what turn a ten-week season into something closer to five months.
Winnipeg summers are hot and dry. On the days it matters, a pool is the most-used thing in the yard by a distance.
Water dropped below the skimmer, lines blown out and plugged, equipment drained, cover on. Done properly it is a half-day, once a year.
The shell overwinters in the ground with water in it — that water is part of what keeps it stable. A pool is never emptied for a Manitoba winter.
Fibreglass, vinyl or concrete
All three work somewhere. This is why one of them suits clay, frost and a short build season better than the others.
No seams, no liner, no joints to open up as the ground around it moves through the year.
Set in days rather than the weeks concrete needs — which matters when the build window runs May to September.
Comfortable underfoot, easy to clean, and a surface that does not abrade feet and swimsuits the way rough finishes can.
Vinyl liners are a scheduled replacement cost. A gelcoat shell is not on that clock.
A non-porous surface gives algae less to hold onto, which generally means less chemistry over a season.
A known shape and a known sequence mean the schedule we give you at the start is the schedule you get.

Pool questions
Yes — there are thousands of them in the ground here. What clay changes is the engineering around the pool: the excavation, the granular bedding the shell sits on, backfilling in step with filling the water so the shell stays true, and building the deck around it so it does not settle away from the coping. Those are the details that separate a pool yard that still looks right in ten years from one that does not.
Week one is excavation and prep, week two the pool set and plumbing, weeks three and four the patio, landscaping and finishing — so most projects are swimming in as little as two to four weeks. A full whole-property rebuild around the pool runs longer, and you get the schedule in writing before we mobilise. Complete packages — pool, mechanical and the landscape around it — typically range from $50,000 to $130,000 depending on size, features and how much of the yard is rebuilt.
We build fibreglass for this climate: one moulded piece, smooth gelcoat, no liner replacement cycle, and far quicker to install in a short season. Vinyl is cheaper up front and carries a scheduled liner cost. Concrete is the most customisable and the least forgiving of ground movement and freeze-thaw.
The pool stays in the ground and stays full. Closing drops the water below the skimmer, blows out and plugs the lines, drains the equipment and puts the cover on. The water left in the shell is part of what holds it stable through the freeze — never empty a pool for a Manitoba winter.
Yes to both. Pool enclosure requirements are a City bylaw matter, not a design preference, and the install needs permits. We handle the applications, and we design the enclosure into the landscape from the start so it reads as part of the yard rather than something screwed on at the end to pass an inspection.
