Winnipeg home at night with lit stone pathway, uplit grasses and a warm entryway

After dark · Winnipeg

In December it’s dark at 4:30. Design for that.

Professional LED landscape lighting — path, uplight, wall wash, step and accent — designed during an evening visit to your property, installed on buried low-voltage cable, and programmed to run itself.

Here is the number that should decide this: in a Winnipeg December the sun is down before five. For nearly half the year, the version of your property you and your neighbours actually see is the dark one.

A terrace you spent serious money on is invisible from the kitchen window from October to April. A front walk you can’t see is a liability when it’s icy. Meanwhile the landscape you can light — the birch, the wall, the steps, the grasses catching frost — looks better at night than it does at noon, because lighting lets you show three things and hide everything else.

So we design lighting at night, on site. Daytime lighting plans are guesses: you cannot see glare, you cannot see what a fixture actually does to a tree, and you cannot see the neighbour’s window you are about to shine into. We walk it after dark, aim real fixtures, and then draw it.

Everything is LED on buried low-voltage cable, using professional-grade fixtures from Bold, FX Luminaire, Kichler and Unique — not the sealed-unit fixtures that end up in the bin in year three.

Lighting is the cheapest square foot in the yard

A fixture that reveals a tree, a wall and a set of steps changes the whole property for a fraction of what another ten feet of terrace would cost — and it does it for the six months of the year when the terrace is under snow.

  • Used more months of the year than anything else we build
  • Safety on steps and walks when they’re icy
  • A lit house is a harder house to approach unseen

Techniques

Eight things light can do to a landscape.

Almost every good scheme is three or four of these used deliberately — not all eight used everywhere. Over-lighting a yard reads as a car park.

Path lighting

Low, shielded fixtures that guide the walk without dotting the lawn with glare.

Up-lighting

Trees, trunks and architecture lit from below — the technique that does the most with the fewest fixtures.

Accent lighting

One specimen, one sculpture, one gate. Choosing what not to light is most of the design.

Deck & step lights

Integrated into risers and caps so the light is visible but the fixture is not. Genuine safety in icy months.

Wall wash

Even light grazing a facade or a retaining wall, which shows off texture in stone and brick.

Pool & water feature

Light in and around water — reflection doubles every fixture you place.

Garden bed lighting

Low light through planting, so beds read as depth after dark instead of a black gap.

Security lighting

Motion-activated coverage at the approaches, zoned separately from the ambient scheme.

How we design it

We come back after dark

It is the one part of our process that genuinely differs from most quotes you will get, and it is the reason the result looks designed rather than installed.

An evening consultation, on your property

We walk the yard at night with test fixtures. You see what an uplight does to your actual spruce, where a path light glares into the dining room, and how much light the neighbour’s porch is already throwing over the fence.

Then the plan gets drawn — fixture type, position, beam angle, wattage, zones and controls — and priced. What you sign is a scheme you have already seen working.

Professional-grade products

Fixtures that can be serviced in ten years

The difference between a professional fixture and a big-box one is not brightness, it is metallurgy, gaskets, serviceable lamps and a warranty that exists. We install brass, copper and marine-grade housings built for freeze-thaw.

01

LED only

About 80% less energy than halogen, 50,000+ hours of life, cooler running and better colour rendering. We do not install halogen.

02

Buried low-voltage

Cable at proper depth on properly sized transformers, with connections made to survive water and frost rather than to save ten minutes.

03

Zones & control

Front, back, feature and security on separate zones — timer, photocell or app, with schedules that change through the year.

How it goes

Four steps, one of them after dark

1

Night visit the important one

An evening consultation at your property with test fixtures, so the design is made in the conditions it has to work in.

About an hour, after sunset
2

Design plan

Custom layout with fixture types, positions, beam angles, zones and transformer sizing — plus a written, itemised quote.

1–2 weeks
3

Install

Cable trenched and buried, fixtures set and aimed, connections sealed. Lawn and beds put back so you cannot tell where we were.

1–3 days typical
4

Program & aim

Timers, photocell or app set up, zones named, and a final aiming pass at night — because fixtures always need adjusting once everything is on.

One evening

Book the consultation for after sunset.

Bring us out in the evening and you will see what the yard can look like before you spend anything.

Lighting questions

The five we’re asked most

How much does landscape lighting cost?

Most projects run $3,000 – $10,000. It moves with the size of the property, the number of fixtures and the control system — a focused front-of-house scheme sits at the lower end, a whole-property design with zones and app control at the upper. Quotes are free and itemised by fixture.

LED or halogen?

LED, no argument. Roughly 80% less energy, 50,000+ hours of life, cooler operation and much better colour quality. We only install LED — halogen systems are what we are usually replacing.

Will it show up on my hydro bill?

Barely. A typical LED landscape lighting system adds about $5 – $15 a month. Timers and photocells keep it running only when it needs to.

Can I control it from my phone?

Yes. App-controlled systems, timers, photocells and smart-home integration are all options, including separate zones, schedules that shift with the season, and dimming. We set it all up and label the zones at handover.

What about snow and winter?

Winter is when the system earns its money — it is dark here from mid-afternoon. What matters is placement: fixtures out of plow and shovel lines, heads set at a height that stays above typical snow, cable buried at depth, and connections made to survive freeze-thaw. We walk that with you at the design stage.
