Hardscape · Winnipeg
Paver patios, natural stone, walkways and driveway extensions — set on a base excavated and compacted for Red River clay, so the surface you paid for is still flat after a decade of freeze-thaw.
Nobody in Winnipeg replaces a patio because they got bored of the stone. They replace it because it moved.
Our clay soil swells and shrinks, the frost line sits around four feet down, and every winter drives water in and out of whatever sits above it. A patio built on a thin base will read beautifully in photos for two seasons and then start telling on itself — a dip at the door, a step out of level, joints opening up, a walkway that sheds water toward the foundation instead of away from it.
So we build the part you never see twice as heavy as the industry standard asks: proper excavation, granular base placed in compacted lifts, compaction tested before any stone goes down, edge restraint on every edge, and grades set so water leaves. Then the finish — Barkman, Belgard, Techo-Bloc and natural stone laid out to a drawing, tied into steps, walls, planting and lighting so the terrace reads as part of the house rather than a slab in the lawn.
We have been doing exactly this in this city since 1993, and we still maintain patios we built two decades ago.
What we build
Hardscape is circulation before it is surface. Where people walk, sit, cook and park decides the shape long before the stone is chosen.

Interlocking pavers from Barkman, Belgard and Techo-Bloc, sized around real furniture rather than a rectangle. Dining needs clearance behind chairs, lounge seating needs a different depth, and a patio serving both usually wants two levels instead of one big field of stone.

Flagstone, limestone and granite in irregular or sawn layouts, for a terrace that never looks like a catalogue page. Each piece is set on the same engineered base as our pavers, so natural stone stays just as flat.

The front walk is the one piece of landscape every visitor uses, and back-yard paths decide how the whole yard gets used. Width, banding and step rhythm are what make a walkway read as designed instead of patched.

Widen the driveway or add a parking pad in pavers that carry vehicle loads. A driveway takes far more weight than a patio, so the base goes deeper again and the edges are restrained to stop the field creeping under tires.
Below the stone
Every one of these is invisible the day we finish, and every one of them is why a Lawn ‘N’ Order quote is not the cheapest quote you will get.
Dug to a depth set by clay and frost, with the subgrade proof-rolled before anything is placed back in.
Base built up in measured lifts and compacted each time — double the depth most installers quote in this city.
Compaction is verified, not assumed, before a single paver is set.
Surfaces pitched away from the house at a grade you can’t feel underfoot but water can.
Every free edge restrained so the field stays tight instead of spreading and opening joints.
Joint material appropriate to the stone and use, so weeds and washout aren’t next summer’s project.

Materials
Chosen at the design stage against the house, not off a rack on install day. Samples come to the site visit.
Large-format, tight joints, quiet colour. Reads architectural next to a newer build.
Softer edges and warmer tone. Forgiving on older houses and mature yards.
Flagstone and slab in irregular or sawn layouts, for a terrace that never looks catalogue.
Where runoff has nowhere to go, the surface itself takes the water down into an open base.

How it goes
We walk the yard, take levels, talk about how you want to use the space, and bring material samples.
A drawn layout with dimensions, materials, base spec and grading — plus a fixed scope so the quote is comparable line for line.
Excavation, base, compaction testing, laying, edge restraint and jointing — with the site cleaned at the end of each day.
We go over settling, joint sand, sealing if it applies, and what our care team handles if you want it looked after.
Word of mouth
“The team designed and built our patio last summer. It survived the harsh winter perfectly. Their expertise in Manitoba’s climate really shows.”
“Lawn ‘N’ Order transformed our backyard into an amazing outdoor living space. Their attention to detail and professionalism is unmatched. Worth every penny!”
“We’ve used them for 5 years for snow removal and lawn maintenance. Always reliable, always professional. Best landscaping company in Winnipeg!”
Patio questions
Most residential patios take 3–5 days. Larger or more complex projects — steps, sitting walls, multiple levels — run 1–2 weeks. You get the schedule in writing before we mobilise, and the site is left tidy each evening.
Heaving is a base failure, not a paver failure. We excavate to depth for Red River clay, build the granular base in compacted lifts, test compaction before laying, and restrain every edge. That is what keeps a surface level through freeze-thaw — and it is why our base spec is roughly double what is commonly quoted here.
Pavers, for this climate. They flex with ground movement, and individual units can be lifted and reset if anything ever needs attention. Poured concrete cracks on clay and has to be cut out to repair.
Optional. Sealing deepens colour and helps resist stains on an entertaining surface, and is normally redone every few years. We’ll tell you plainly whether your stone benefits from it rather than selling it by default.
When it’s part of a larger design-build project, yes. Isolated repairs on someone else’s install usually aren’t a fit for our crews, and we’ll say so at the first conversation instead of wasting your time.
