Lawn 'N' Order crew building a compacted base for a paver terrace in Winnipeg

Landscape construction · Winnipeg · est. 1993

Built once. Built for here.

Terraces, walls, pools, kitchens, fire, lighting and planting installed as one connected project — by the crew that drew it, on a base engineered for Red River clay and a four-foot frost line.

A build is not a list of features bolted onto a yard. It is one construction project with a sequence — and the sequence is where most landscapes are won or lost.

Grades and water come first, then base, then structure, then the finishes people actually see. When one company owns all of it, nothing gets sequenced badly, no trade blames the last trade, and no detail gets dropped in a handoff. That is the whole argument for design-build, and in Winnipeg it matters more than most markets: our clay moves, our frost line sits about four feet down, and our build season is short enough that a wasted week costs a season.

We have been constructing landscapes here since 1993, certified by CMHA, Allan Block and Belgard, with MBNLA-judged award projects across the city. Everything below — hardscape, water, fire, light, planting, fencing — is installed by our own crews and, if you want, maintained by them afterwards.

The part you never see

Everything that decides whether it is still level in ten years.

A finished terrace is about 15% of the work. The other 85% is underneath it, and it is where a Winnipeg build either survives freeze-thaw or starts moving after the second winter.

01

Excavation to real depth

We dig out to a depth sized for clay and frost, not to the shallowest number a quote can hide behind.

02

Compaction in lifts

Granular base placed and compacted in measured lifts, tested for proper compaction before a single paver lands.

03

Grading & drainage design

Water is routed away from the house and off finished surfaces — planned on the drawing, verified on site.

04

Frost-depth footings

Kitchens, fireplaces, pergola posts and fence posts set below the frost line so they stay plumb.

05

Edge restraint & joints

Proper edge restraint and jointing keeps pavers tight instead of creeping outward season after season.

06

Zone 3b materials

Pavers, wall systems, fixtures and plants specified for -40 °C and our freeze-thaw cycling — nothing rated for milder markets.

Graphic needed — base cross-section A labelled section through a finished terrace: subgrade → geotextile → granular base lifts → bedding → paver → edge restraint, with depths called out. Photo of an open excavation with a tape in it also works.

What we build

Nine disciplines, all in-house.

Most projects combine several of these. They are listed separately because that is how people search for them — not because we install them separately.

Sequence

How a complete build actually runs

Three stages on site, in this order. Skipping or reordering any of them is how landscapes fail.

Yard stripped back before construction begins in Winnipeg

1 · Ground, water and levels

Site protection, excavation, and the grading plan set out on the ground. Where water goes in a storm is decided here — not after the stone is down.

  • Lot grading compliant with Bylaw 7294/98
  • Drainage and downspout routing resolved
  • Base placed, compacted in lifts and tested

2 · Structure and hardscape

Walls, terraces, steps, pool shell, kitchen and fireplace footings. Everything structural goes in while the site is still a construction site, in one mobilisation.

  • Footings below the four-foot frost line
  • Gas, water and electrical roughed in once
  • Levels checked against the drawing, not eyeballed

3 · Planting, light and handover

Zone 3b planting, lighting, final grading and cleanup — then a walkthrough covering how the space works, what it needs, and what we look after if you want us to.

  • Plants rated Zone 3 or hardier
  • Lighting aimed and timed with you on site
  • Optional care plan with our property care team
Then it is ours to look after, if you’d like it to be.

Build questions

What people ask before they book

How long does a landscape build take?

Most residential patios take 3–5 days. Larger or more complex hardscape runs 1–2 weeks. A complete backyard transformation with pool, kitchen and planting is scheduled as a multi-week block inside one build season, and you get the sequence in writing before we start.

When should I book?

Earlier than most people expect. Build season runs roughly May to October and fills months ahead, so winter and early spring are when summer installs get confirmed. Projects designed over winter are the ones that break ground first.

Do you use subcontractors?

No. Design, construction and ongoing care are three specialist teams inside one company. Your design is never subbed out, the handoff to the construction crew is managed in-house, and we’re still accountable for the work years later.

How deep is your base?

We double typical industry base depth because of Red River clay and a four-foot frost line, placed and compacted in lifts and tested for compaction before any stone is laid. It is the part of the quote you never see and the reason the surface is still level in a decade.

Do you handle permits and lot grading?

Yes. Our plans comply with Winnipeg’s Lot Grading Bylaw 7294/98, and we assist with permit applications where a project needs them.

What will it cost?

It depends on scope — a single walkway and a full transformation are different orders of magnitude. The online calculator gives an instant range across 16 services, and we discuss anticipated investment openly at the consultation once the scope is clear.
